Patriotic Flower Pots

The 4th of July is almost here! Time to hang up all that red, white and blue. Even if you’re not having a party, it’s always nice to be festive. And there’s no need to get crazy! Simple things can go a long way. Take these flower pots for example. Cheap supplies, easy to assemble, and they’ll add so much color wherever you put them. Ok, they were especially cheap because I’m a procrastinator and all of the 4th of July decor is on sale. See, planning ahead isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. So here’s what you’ll need for 3 Patriotic Flower Pots.

3 flower pots which were about $1.50 each, 3 bunches of “flowers” which were on sale for $1 each, some green foam which I think was about $3 for 3 blocks of foam, and some mossy stuff which I already had from a previous project. I also grabbed some cute ribbon that was on sale.

The first thing to do is put some foam in the pots. I used foam that is especially for floral projects, and let me be honest, that stuff is a pain in the arse. It’s way easier to cut than regular styrofoam but it leaves green stuff all over the place and it…smells funny. So if you use that kind of foam, cut it over some napkins or paper or something. I just had to round off some of the edges so it would fit in the pot. But make sure you don’t trim too much off, you should have to shove the foam into the bottom. That way the foam is stuck firmly in the pot and it will hold on to the flowers.

Now you pretty much just have to jam the flowers into the foam. BUT if the stems are too long for the pots, you’ll have to cut them down. Which can be an even bigger pain in the arse. If you know some secret, easy way of cutting them, leave me a note in the comments. Because regular scissors just aren’t having it. But once the stem is the right length, stick it into the foam. We’re already almost done! I got a pack of some little American flags also, and I thought they’d go perfectly with the pots. So I stuck that in too.

Now just throw some mossy stuff in there.

You can also take it a step further and add some ribbon around the pot! I just used some double sided tape to stick it on, so once the 4th is over, I can re-use the pots for another holiday, or use them for some real flowers! Here are all three pots, along with some festive bandannas to add even more color.

B-e-a-utiful! So…does this count as having a green thumb?
